Poetry from yoga/poetry workshop

By yoga/poetry students

The following poetry was submitted by students after attending a wonderful yoga and poetry seminar at Olympic Park Institute at Lake Crescent in Washington State.  Writing directly after practicing yoga allowed for an openness that was stunning.

Seminar Description:

Poetry in Motion: Yoga, Nature and The Magic of Words
Joanne Pearson and Kate Reavey
October 8-10, Friday - Sunday

With autumn in full color, join us for the practice of turning inward and reflecting on nature. Joanne will start the mornings with an active two-hour yoga session to awaken and stretch body and mind. Afternoon sessions explore our relationship with nature. Kate will lead short, interpretive walks around the old growth of Barnes Point and guide us in connecting our thoughts to poetry. The group will take in the air and tranquility of the forest setting and spend evenings around the fireplace, while escaping the stresses of daily life.

Struggle

Poets' words elude me
Chased from my mind; my pen dead
An empty word store

---Lucy Lauterbach

Yoga Mat

Filled with tiny purple pillows
holding dogs, cats, pigeons and warriors.
Without judgment you remain firmly
soft.

Marymere Falls

Fern fingers dangle
Mountain tears wash basalt cheeks
Wet thunder drowns thoughts

--Amelia Andaleon

Yoga Mat

Filled with potential, a promise of flexibility
Hibiscus flowers offer distraction of joy
while the muscles and joints ache

Sticky surface glues my feet

and hands
my heart and soul

Hiking

Rhythmic Steady
Panting Climbing Sweating
Worth it at the end
Meditation

Pose
Difficult Elusive
Challenging, Invigorating, Inspiring
A goal to achieve
Down Dog

--Mary Schuneman

Rain
nourish birth
pelting, whispering, puddling
time to renew
sun

Snowski
pivoting, edging down
continuing, fearing on
breathe, repeat, mark, go

--Chris Zenner

Silence
Still, vibrant
Listening, connecting, being present
Many hearts beat together
Peace

Yoga Mat
Blue beneath my feet
Filled with a graceful practice
No more elbow dogs

--Mary Alice Duhme

Froggie
You light the morning
low croak under wet wood porch
pouring rain your pleasure

Shoulders
sore alive
tensing flexing relaxing
learn to balance ups and downs
carry with grace

Lake Crescent
reflecting pewter
shining rippling changing
huge luminous surprise mirror
water snuggled within mountains

--Jill Onewein

Silence
active listening
absorbing, echoing, deepening
allowing the mind to open
release

Foliage
multi-colored alive
penetrating lacing turning
sheltering a separate world
camouflage

--Eileen Bleeker

Yoga Bell
soft clear
ringing singing calling
come back to earth
yoga chimes

Lake Crescent Lodge
Walking in darkness
Flashlight guide to the lodge
After the rain, wine

Forest Walk

Every shade of green
Brilliant yellow, copper brown
mushrooms red and white

---Pam Hampton

Absence
Boundless, Silent
Unknowing, Confusing, Letting go
Look inside for your truth
Opportunity

Yoga Mat filled with:
Disorientation
Conflicting Feelings
An island boundary for my mind
Tactile resistance

Whether

Should we go to hike
Or not, and lollygag around the lodge
Depends on wet or dry

--Joanne Pearson

When I walk into the city
Hot concrete sidewalk makes me sweat
Buildings, hiding the sun, blind me with ads
Streets flow like rivers, dense with people
Moving, rushing, fast

--Natalie Manion

Breathing

breathe in cedar branches
breathe out slowly
breathe in chickadees
breathe out slowly
breathe in licorice fern
breathe out softly
breathe in vanilla leaf
breathe out quietly
breathe in epiphytes
breathe out stillness

poses

asymmetrical, disharmonic
stretching, breathing, grounding
back to my animal self
practice

Wonder

chickadees twittering
crows barking
water lapping
heron croaking
ducks chattering
wood smoke
gravel
cool water
warm sun
a mountain of pines
steam rising from cabins
clouds swirling
I wonder how we save joy in our bodies

And then,

Walking on the Elwha trail in October
ruby crowned kinglets
hover, flit, chasing insects
forest hummingbirds

Startled by Movement, Attracted by Sound
ruby crowned kinglets
five or six
hovering, hopping, calling
how can they be so beautiful?
tiny olive birds

--Emily Lardner

Lake Crescent
dark deep
shining changing reflecting
a glacier's ancient path
chilly morning dip!

Last night, rain
This morning,
scattered stars in a puddle

Partner Yoga
sincere help
holding following breathing
"Mary, I trust you"
peace

---Kate Reavey

Madame
Old, elegant
Rattling, moving, vibrating
Carrying me safely home
Gutless wonder

Nicole

Singlehood gone now
Motherhood brings fulfillment
Unexpected joy!

---Nancy McFadden
