About Bread For The Journey

Bread for the Journey believes that in all people and communities there exists what Thomas Merton calls a "hidden wholeness". This means we do not necessarily need to figure out how to fix everything in the world; rather, our task is to listen more carefully for what is already strong and good and whole, and put our heartfelt support behind it. Our work is to watch quietly in the midst of communities in need, and seek out those people who belong to those communities who are the most courageous, faithful and wise.

We do not presume to know which program, project or idea will ultimately heal the vast array of community problems. But we can trust our ability to recognize someone who is energetic and insightful, to be inspired by someone who has a dream and is eager to serve. Follow them; they know where the hidden wholeness lives in their community. Find them, and help them get what they need.

Bread for the Journey enables us to become a meaningful part of our local communities as well as to the larger community of humankind to which we all belong. Many projects are just beginning - some are simply dreams, ideas in the minds of hopeful people. Our work is to help make these dreams a reality.

Most grants average between $250 and $3,000 and are for start-up costs, not for continuing support. Over 90% of the projects that started with Bread for the Journey's support are flourishing.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of our generous volunteers, Bread for the Journey has virtually no administrative costs. We keep our overhead below 5%, so that 95% of all donations go directly to those in need.

The national office exists to support the creation and development of local chapters of Bread for the Journey throughout the United States. The national office does not provide grants. Only local chapters of Bread for the Journey provide grants. If you are interested in funding for a project, please contact a local Bread for the Journey chapter in your area.See Chapter Locations for more information.

We are a small organization, made possible by private donations of time, energy and funds. We welcome contributions of all kinds and would be deeply grateful to have you join in our efforts. All donations can be made to Bread for the Journey, Inc., a federally tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity. You can now donate over the World Wide Web through Give To Charity
